One woman’s bed bug story

Day Seven: Encasements

with 2 comments

Update: I am very happy with my Clean Rest pillow encasement, however, it turns out the mattress encasements that Clean Rest makes/sells are all 17″ deep! My new mattress is 9.5″ deep. Plus I found these bad/so-so reviews on Amazon.com.

So after a little online window shopping, I decided to go for the National Allergy Elegance (full-size, 12″ depth) mattress cover and a cheap vinyl encasement for the box spring. Protect-A-Bed I stayed away from for two reasons: (1) the Allerzip has a top layer of soft cotton that my PCO said the bugs can nest in (2) they don’t disclose shipping charges in an easy-to-access place on their website (although a few third-party Amazon.com sellers sell them and disclose their shipping charges there.) If other people have independent verification of (1) I’d love to hear it. Otherwise, I am not so paranoid that a little zipper opening will freak me out. It’s a new mattress and the bugs have to find it! Plus I will tape over it.

I postponed the delivery of my new bed until July 23, which is about a week and a half after my second treatment. However, on PCO Danny’s recommendation, I went to Bed Bath and Beyond (in Tribeca) to shop for encasements the night after the treatment, just in case PCO Danny was somehow wrong (blasphemy, I know) and they didn’t have bed bug-proof ones… in which case I would have to order online and that could take forever.

I ended up purchasing two full-size Clean Rest mattress encasements and one standard-size Clean Rest pillow encasement:

They specifically say “blocks dust mites & bed bugs” just as PCO Danny said they would. The mattress encasements were $90 each and the pillow encasement was $20, but I get a constant barrage of 20% off Bed Bath and Beyond coupons in the mail. (I think have some now, but they are in a blue plastic garbage bag somewhere. ) And the cashier said I could bring in my receipt with the coupons at any time to get the discount.
